Flashbacks

I've been pondering something and while the annoying goat only allows tiny posts, I thought I'd throw my question out to those who are riding the crazy LJ train.

My next Hawaii Five-O story is going to contain a number of flashbacks. Some will be short while others will be a few pages long. I have a love hate relationship with flashbacks, but they are really necessary.

My questions is this.

With the longer flashbacks, should I keep them all in italics or should I do the whole date and location thing at the beginning of each one?

Is one less jarring or more helpful than the other?

Thoughts?

EDIT

I'm going with a date and location for the long passages of flashbacks.

Thanks to everyone for their input and thoughts!

Personally i'd rather read it with the date and location before the flashbacks.

I find italics can be a bit hard on the eyes, especially if there's a large chunk of text, and just from a formatting point of view i think the date and location looks much better.

I was leaning toward the date and location for the longer flashbacks and italics for the really short stuff. I just wasn't sure if would be jarring.

Date and location; I think it looks neater - and stops me from playing 'find the broken end-italic tag'!

I was thinking along those lines, for clarity and for my poor eyes, but I wasn't sure if people had a preference. Thanks for the input!

Italics would make the most impact
Just my thought of course.

I was leaning toward keeping the short bits in italics and the longer with the date and location.

Would that be jarring?

My personal preference (as a reader) is not to have long passages in italics - I find it hard on the eyes and stylistically kind of jarring.

I was really leaning that way, but wanted to throw my question out there. In books I tend to groan at pages of italics, but wasn't sure if I was alone in my personal taste or not.

Thanks for the input!

I also throw in my vote for no italics!

Thank you! I was going for the no italics, but wanted to feel that idea out. :D

For a long passage, I think the date & location at the beginning would be easier on the eyes. Not that italics would keep me from reading it. ;) So excited for this one!

I'm going with the date-stamp for the long passages.

I am so stoked to write this!! I had all those trains, planes and long waits in between to flesh this out.

And I owe you a big hug for poking my muse in this direction!!

If it is a long fic with lon flashbacks, then my preference is for the date and time stamp without italics as that keep is organized and easier to read.

If you want to set the flashbacks of a bit, you could always block them with narrower margins on both sides.

Depends on the flashback......sometimes for me reading the date/time flicks me out of the story...were as with the italics it flows more easily into letting the reader share the memory. If the day/date is important then okay, but if it is the memory itself the smooth me into it with th italics. I hope that makes sense.....
